A Dive into Drone Cinematography.

At Defy Studios, we utilise a variety of drones, each suited to different filming needs. From FPV to the cinematic Mavic range and DJI Inspire 3 our team can use the tools best suited to your video.

FPV Drone Flythroughs

One of our standout techniques is filming exterior and interior spaces with FPV drones. This method is perfect for showcasing properties, factories, stadiums, event and commercial spaces.

By meticulously planning the flight path and using advanced stabilization techniques in post-production, we create smooth, continuous shots that keep viewers engaged from start to finish.

A great example of our FPV drone is the flythrough we filmed for Morley Glass. We used an FPV drone to capture the entire integral blind building process in one continuous take. This method not only showcases the scale of the facility but also provides an engaging and informative tour for viewers.

Cinematic Drones

For projects that demand cinematic filmmaking, our team employs high-end cinematic drones equipped with the latest airborne cameras.

These drones allow us to capture smooth sweeping shots that add a cinematic flair to films, commercials, and promotional videos.

By employing techniques such as orbiting, tracking, and reveal shots, we create visually compelling narratives that captivate audiences and elevate the storytelling to new heights.

VFX & CGI Integration with Drone Footage

Combining drone footage with CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) opens up endless possibilities.

For example, in our project for ARBETA, we blended live-action drone shots with VFX graphics to create a seamless visual experience. Callout graphics bolster the voiceover by showing important statistics helping convey information to the viewer.

This hybrid approach allows us to depict scenarios that are otherwise impossible to film in reality. For example, if you want to film a building for prospective buyers, but it doesn’t yet exist.

Planning and Execution

Pre-Production: This phase is crucial. We start by scouting the location and discussing the project’s goals with our clients. Understanding the site and planning the flight path are essential to ensuring a smooth shoot day.

On-Site Execution: On the day of the shoot, we set up a base station and conduct several test flights to fine-tune our approach. Factors like lighting and weather conditions play a significant role in determining the best time to capture footage.

Post-Production: Stabilizing and editing the footage is where the magic happens. We use advanced software to ensure that every shot is smooth and visually appealing. This phase also involves integrating any CGI elements if needed.
